UNN Condemns Infiltration of Campus Event, Reaffirms Commitment to Student Safety

The Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has condemned the Infiltration of campus events, reaffirming its commitment to student safety

This follows the unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday, September 12, 2025, during a burn fire night where one, Chiebonam Nweze, was stabbed to desth.

The event was organized by students’ association of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

Inya Agha Egwu, Ag. Public Relations Officer, UNN, in a statement made available to Daily News Nigeria on Sunday, stated, “The event was infiltrated by miscreants from a neighboring community, who instigated violence. In the course of the disturbance, a guest at the event, Mr. Chiebonam Nweze, was stabbed. Sadly, despite prompt efforts to save his life, he passed away before receiving medical attention at the University’s Medical Center.”

Parts of the statement read:

“Investigations have confirmed that neither the deceased nor the assailants were students of the University of Nigeria.

“We wish to assure the public that the University Security Unit, working in close collaboration with the Anti-Cult Unit of the Nigeria Police, has successfully apprehended all those responsible for the tragic incident.

“The Management of the University of Nigeria expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr. Chiebonam Nweze and prays for comfort during this time of grief.

“In light of the unfortunate development, the University has reviewed its guidelines for student social activities.

“Henceforth, all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit. Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m.

“The University of Nigeria remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community and will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
