Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has called on people of the state to take proactive steps in addressing societal challenges and ensuring that children stay away from the street during school hours.

Kefas made the remarks while declaring open a two-day workshop on Accountability and Good Governance for local government officials, traditional rulers, and stakeholders in the state.

The theme of the workshop entitled: “Effective Local Governance: A Necessity for Rapid and Sustainable Development of Taraba State” was necessary for transformation of the State.

In his keynote address, Kefas emphasized that the gathering was a call to duty, reminding leaders of their responsibility to improve the lives of citizens.

Kefas tasked local government chairmen to take proactive steps in addressing societal challenges particularly in ensuring that street children are enrolled in school.

The governor said that a committee for the construction of new schools would soon be inaugurated with work to commence shortly.
.
The governor also highlighted his administration’s commitment to healthcare delivery and strengthening of security across the state.

Kefas noted that both traditional rulers and elected local government chairmen have critical roles in governance, urging them to uphold peace and serve as responsible leaders.

He noted that the workshop was aimed at changing the mindset of participants, urging them to support free education, security initiatives, and youth empowerment programs, declaring that the era of wasteful government spending was over and called for accountability in public office.

Speaking at the occasion, Major General Henry Ayamasaowei (rtd.), CEO of Euclase Resources Limited, underscored the importance of local governments as the foundation of democracy noting that local government councils are tasked with the responsibility of maintaining order and improving communities, making capacity building for public officials essential.

According to him, Governor Kefas’ administration is prioritizing capacity development and assessing progress made so far during the period under review.

Ayamasaowei reiterated that effective local government administration is crucial for delivering public goods and ensuring sustainable development in Taraba State.

Earlier in his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Godfrey Dame, stated that the workshop aimed to promote accountability and progress in society.

He commended Governor Kefas for his dedication and commitment to making Taraba State a better place, while also wishing participants fruitful deliberations.

The Permanent Secretary said the workshop is expected to equip local government officials and traditional rulers with the knowledge and strategies needed to drive good governance, enhance service delivery, and foster development across the state.

On its part, Chairman, Association of Local government of Nigeria (ALGON), Taraba State Chapter, Dr. Aminu Jauro Hassan, observed the workshop was timely as participants have been sensitized on how to discharge their duties to meet with the yearning and aspiration of the people in hinterland.

Meanwhile, a cross-section of traditional rulers who spoke with our correspondent shortly after the programme, commended the governor, urging him not relent in his efforts.
