Police arrest 30 Youths in Enugu over Biafra Day Commemoration

About thirty youths suspected to be members of Biafra Zionists Movement (BZM) were on Tuesday arrested by the police at Okpara Square, Enugu in connection with the Biafra Day commemoration.

A source said that the pro-Biafra activists were at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu to commemorate the May 30th set-aside by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for remembrance of Biafra fallen heroes and agitators who died in course of self actualization of an independent republic.

It was learnt that the agitators were in the process of carrying out a march past at the Michael Okpara Square parade ground with their Leader, Mazi Benjamin Onwuka Kalu, taking salute before they were picked up and hurled into three waiting Police Hilux vehicles that moved them to state police headquarters, Enugu for interrogation.

Items including Biafra Zionists insignia, stickers, flags of Biafra, Israel and USA were said to have been found in their possessions.

One of the stickers read: “I Love My Nation Biafra I am proud of Zionist.”

Contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, said he does not have any information on the matter and would get back when he gets information on it.

Meanwhile, Enugu the Enugu State capital witnessed a total sit-at-home on Tuesday in compliance with the directive of the leadership of IPOB.

Normal business activities were grounded as major parts of the metropolis had low vehicular movement. Few shops and provisions stores were open with low customers while Ogbete Main Market, the biggest market in the city was shut down.

Commercial banks did not open for business while primary and post-primary schools had their gates under lock and key.
