Market Building Faces Imminent Collapse

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has been urged to take immediate action following the discovery of serious structural defects at the Old Market Building in Umuna, Orlu Local Government Area of the state.

The call was made by Chief Anselm Okonkwo, the Supervisory Councillor for Health in Orlu LGA, after a state government inspection team assessed the condition of the market.

The inspection was prompted by a distress call from traders who raised alarm over the rapidly deteriorating state of the market structure.

According to Chief Okonkwo, findings from the inspection revealed that the market building lacks proper structural reinforcement, making it unsafe for human use.

He warned that the condition of the market poses an imminent risk of collapse, thereby endangering the lives of traders, customers, and other members of the public who frequent the area daily.

“The absence of proper reinforcement in the structure is a serious concern. This building can no longer be considered safe, and urgent steps must be taken to prevent a possible disaster,” he said.
