Imo: Governor Uzodimma signs Bill increasing retirement age of teachers to 65 years into Law

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has signed into law, the Bill increasing retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years of age and from 35 to 40 years of service.

In his address yesterday, while signing the Bill into law at Government House, Owerri, Governor Uzodimma said the law came in line with the law passed by the National Assembly and endorsed by the President, increasing retirement age of teachers.

“We saw that law as one that will benefit our teachers and decided to domesticate it”, he stated.

According to him, teachers play enormous role in the development of the state and country at large.

The governor expressed joy that the domestication process had been concluded as a result of the accelerated action by the state house of assembly.

He challenged the teachers to reciprocate the gesture by showing more commitment to their duties by moulding the children entrusted in their care into better leaders of tomorrow.

Earlier, while presenting the Bill to the governor for his assent, the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, agreed that the Bill came as an Executive Bill and was accorded the accelerated attention it deserved and finally passed into law on November 16, 2023.

Olemgbe said the law could not have come at a better time than now when there is increasing need for experienced teachers “to man our primary and secondary schools”.

He commended the governor for for a well thought out Bill.
