Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved the computerization of Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri.
.
This followed the request by Chairman, Board of Directors of IMSU, Owerri, Rev. Fr. Prof. Ogbonna to computerize the institution for accurate data for planning.
.
Uzodimma gave the approval during a meeting he held with Board members and Management Team of the University in his office at the Government House, Owerri, yesterday.
.
The governor told the visitors that all he needed was for them to clean up the system to move the university forward.
..
He berated the high level of corruption in the University system, a situation where staff of the bursary department forged receipts to divert government money that should be paid into the Treasury Single Account (TSA)
.
He noted, “the university is not just a social service but probably a mixture of business interest and social service.
.
According to him, any demand for special salary must be backed up with revenue generation.
.
“We should have a revenue projection that will consequently graduate into expenditure projection, so funding will not be a problem, and if government must intervene once in a while, we can intervene”.
.
He made it clear to the management that he is only interested in result and not rhetorics and excuses or complaining about all the challenges, stressing, “The management should be able to come up with workable plan to move forward.”
.
In his speech, the Chairman Board of Management of the University, Rev. Fr. Professor Ogbonna listed some of the discoveries of the board, pointing out that, “New mindset is needed because the university is in trouble with the old mindset, Reorientation for total rebuilding of the system.”
.
Ogbonna said the needs of the University was classified into ‘Urgent and Critical’ by the Board, listing the critical needs to include; accreditation of the College of Medicine and Engineering, staff promotion and welfare, staff employment and improvement of the physical infrastructure.
.
While requesting the state government to help them computerize the University Professor Ogbonna requested the Governor’s empowerment for the management to reach out for interventions to rebuild the University.
.
In his contribution, a member of the Board, Chief Leo Stan Eke posited that with few amendments, the management Board had the capacity to make IMSU the best University in Nigeria.
“The structures to achieve that is already on ground only requiring few amendments and new mindset through improved salary and general welfare of the staff”, he stated.
