Dying South-East Economy: Umuigbo Assembly Begs Tinubu To Release Kanu

Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide, a Pan-Igbo Socio-Cultural group has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and save the economy of the five South-Eastern States of Nigeria from impending doom.

The Chairman, Abia State Chapter of the group, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, made the plea during their 2025 Security, Peace, Unity and Reinvention Summit, held in Enugu.

According to Ehiemere, Kanu’s release would help to restore peace and security in the South-East States, which has been plagued by violence and instability since the arrest of Kanu and incessant Sit-at-home order to protest his detention.

He stressed that releasing Kanu would be a significant step in addressing the root causes of the conflict and promoting dialogue, a situation he said takes everyone to the direction of peace and harmony.

Ehiemere pointed out that releasing Kanu as gesture for peace, would help in restoring the economic crisis that has bedeviled South-East since the introduction of the Sit-at-home in protest over his continues detention.

He said that Kanu’s detention has worsened the security situation in the South-East, reiterating that the plea for Kanu’ s release is not only a security concerns but a plea for restoration of normal and economic development in South-East, and called on President Bola Tinubu to tamper justice with mercy.

The Umuigbo Assembly leader called for collaborative initiative’ between the Nigeria Police Force, the youths and traditional rulers.

He said that such collaboration will help in identifying the underlying causes of crime, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education.

Ehiemere suggested that community policing will reduce the wave of insecurity in South-East as every community knows her bad eggs.

He noted that these bad eggs can easily be handled by the community that should monitor and report suspicious activities.

Ehiemere further called for the promotion of education, awareness workshops and seminars.

He further called for the campaigns to educate youths about the consequences of crime and the importance of crime prevention.
