…As IGP urges medical practitioners to treat gunshot, accident victims without police report

The Nigerian Police Force has concluded all arrangements to host the fourth edition of its annual conference/retreat in Owerri, Imo State capital.

Ahead of the conference/retreat, for senior Police officers which takes place from October 30 to November 1, 2023 at Landmark event center, Owerri, the Force Public Relations Officer, (FPPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi travelled all the way to Owerri, to ensure preparations were going as planned, utilizing the opportunity to brief the media.

He recalled that the 3rd edition which held from 31st October to 2nd November 2022 was also held at the same venue in Owerri.

The FPPRO listed some areas of focus/lecturers for this year’s conference to include; Service scheme for the Nigeria Police Force, professionalizing the Force criminal investigation department, re-orientation programme for Officers and Men of the Nigeria Police Force, as well as the police pension scheme.

Adejobi said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected as Special Guest of Honour at the event, as he is expected to inaugurate conference and deliver a keynote address. He listed other special guests to include; state governors, Minister of Police Affairs, Service Chiefs, heads of other security agencies, past Inspectors General of Police, traditional rulers and other community leaders, among others.

He said the conference, with the theme: “Fostering economic prosperity, social integration and political development, through enhanced internal security mechanism was part of the IGP’s commitment to improve internal security of the country, for the implementation of the federal government policies.

The FPPRO posited that part of the reason to host the programme in South East zone, Imo State is to send a clear signal to men of the underworld that the police and other security agents are always ready for them, thereby decimating their activities.

According to the FPPRO, the conference will have a session for political leaders, where the IGP and other senior Police officers will interface with leaders of registered political parties in the country.

“The primary focus of this conference is improvement of internal security and not for political partisanship, as the NPF is dedicated to the wellbeing and safety of all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations”
.
Meanwhile the FPPRO disclosed that the IGP has made a resounding call to all medical practitioners in Nigeria to provide prompt and compassionate treatment to all victims of gunshots and accidents, irrespective of the presence or absence of Police Report.

He said the directive aligns with the compulsory treatment of victims of gunshots and accidents Act of 2017, which mandates that all health care providers prioritize the immediate care and stabilization of such patients, recognizing the critical importance of timely medical attention in saving lives.

Adejobi said the IGP however encouraged the health care providers to always fulfill their obligation towards crime fighting by inviting the police to make full assessment of the victim while treatment is ongoing.
