A total number of 202 Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service have graduated from Correctional Service Training School, Enugu.

Speaking at the Passing Out Parade Ceremony of the 226th Recruit Basic Course at Correctional Service Training School, Enugu on Friday, the Controller General of Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, said the training was one which the participants are expected to undergo as they progress in their chosen career as a Correctional Service Officer.

Nababa who was represented by the Assistant Controller General, Zone G, Benin City, Ovie Friday Esezabor, explained that the course was meant to address the fundamental of Correctional practices which new entrants from the Correctional Assistants, Inspectorate Cadre need to know.

According to him, “As Assistant and Inspectorate cadre they are expected to perform custodial and non-custodial duties and any other functions assigned to them.
.
“From the beautiful parade been reviewed this morning, I am quite sure that, the above skills have been fully inculcated into you”, he told the graduands.

His words: “As you graduate today, make good use of what you learnt, because you will be needing it as you progress in the service.
.
“Let me remind you that, national security is essentially among the numerous tasks expected of Correctional Service Officer. Therefore, the Service officer under my leadership has zero tolerance to indiscipline and unprofessional conducts.
.
“Although your passing out parade ceremony is coming at a time the nation has gotten newly elected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCON, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. You must remain resolute in carrying out your lawful duties in consolidating the gains of the past administration.

“However, our job is enshrined in the 2019 Correctional Service Act which has to do with security, reformation, rehabilitation and re-integration of reformed inmates back to the society.
.
“We are also involved in the internal security operations across the country. You are also aware that the Nigerian Correctional Service is one of the main tripodal stands of the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria.

“Our officers and men have proven themselves worthy ambassadors in various joint operations across the country. We thus render essential and
critical services to our father land.
.
Speaking on recent promotion interview conducted, the Nigerian Correctional Service boss said it is being given urgent attention for possible early release.

“In the light of the above, therefore, capacity building of Correctional Service personnel and welfare have continuously remained one of my cardinal agenda in taking the service to a greater height with training and re-training of personnel in partnership with relevant agencies like, the Nigerian Army, special forces training centre, Kontagora, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, National Institute for Security Studies, Bwari, Abuja, National Defence College,Abuja. Others are UNODC, PRAWA, PFN to mention but a few”, he added.

He lauded President Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Honourable Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for the support given him in driving the Correctional Service Act, 2019 despite the prevailing challenges.

Earlier, the Commandant, Correctional Service Training School, Enugu, CC Habiba Ahmad, said she was highly impressed with the passing out parade ceremony despite the heavy rain, adding that it was a blessing.

The Commandant Habiba Ahmad thanked the graduands and staff for their resilience, urging them to remain good ambassadors of the School.

Among the dignitaries at the event were representatives of the Governor of Enugu State Peter Mbah , General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, the Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly, Nigerian Customs Service CAPIO ,etc.
